Waikato / Bay of Plenty

Across the region, libraries are looking ahead with new spaces opening in 2026 and teams adapting with agility to keep communities learning, connected, and thriving..

Libraries across Waikato and Bay of Plenty have had an incredible year, championing literacy, digital inclusion, and community wellbeing.

Revamped reading programmes sparked a love of books, while financial literacy and cyber safety sessions empowered communities to stay informed and secure.

Innovative initiatives like STEM kits, Makerspaces, and the “Library of Things” helped people adapt and thrive, alongside new spaces such as Te Ara Mātauranga in Waihi Beach. Partnerships for digital skills and AI tutorials opened doors for lifelong learning, and creative events—from poetry showcases to escape rooms—strengthened social connection. Libraries also extended outreach services to reduce isolation.

Looking ahead, work continues at Ngātea, Tokoroa and Tauranga Libraries all due to open in 2026. Hamilton faced an unexpected challenge when a fire closed Hillcrest Library, but the team quickly relocated to a temporary space in Hamilton Gardens—creating fresh opportunities for learning and community engagement.

Together, these efforts show libraries as inclusive, future-focused hubs where communities learn, connect, and grow.
