Vanisa Dhiru |Commissioner, Library Information Advisory Commission (LIAC) Manawatū-born Indian Vanisa Dhiru is an equality champion with a strong sense of social responsibility. She holds commissioner roles with the NZ National Commission of UNESCO and the Library & Information Advisory Commission, alongside other advisory and panel roles for NGOs and government departments. Her day job is as the Community Manager of InternetNZ. During her career Vanisa has held various leadership roles including CEO of Volunteering New Zealand, Executive Director of 20/20 Trust, and President of the National Council of Women NZ. Based in Wellington, she is a member of the global BMW Foundation Responsible Leaders Network, Global Women NZ, and the Manawatū regional Te Aho Tāmaka leadership programme. Read more >>> |
Amy Hughes | Wellington Zoo | General Manager Communication, Experience and Conservation After starting at Wellington Zoo as Marketing and Communications Advisor in 2005, Amy has worked in various roles at Wellington Zoo covering learning, visitor experience, marketing and conservation and sustainability. She has overseen the experiential transformation of the Zoo over the last ten years alongside the physical development of the Zoo Capital Programme, of which Meet the Locals He Tuku Aroha was the last stage. She was a Finalist for Wellingtonian of the Year 2014 – Education. Amy is the regional representative for Australia and New Zealand on the International Zoo Educators Board of Directors and is an elected member on the Zoo and Aquarium Association Australasia )ZAA) Board. |

Jan attended Villa Maria College before graduating from Christchurch College of Education with a Diploma in Teaching (Primary) and the University of Canterbury with a Bachelor of Education. In 2016 she graduated from the University of Canterbury with a Master’s in Education with First Class Honours. Jan pursued a career in primary school teaching which saw her working in schools in Invercargill and Greymouth before embarking on a career as a school principal. Over her 20 years as a primary school principal, she led across four schools across Southland and Tauranga. |

Rachael Esson | Te Pouhuaki National Librarian Appointed Te Pouhuaki National Librarian on 17 December 2020, Rachel Esson is responsible for leading all National Library services in New Zealand.She also contributes to the leadership of the Information and Knowledge Services branch of the Department of Internal Affairs. Previously Director Content Services of the National Library, Rachel is the first internal appointment to the role. She is a professionally registered librarian who has held senior and strategic roles in academic and research libraries for many years. She has researched and published in the area of evaluation of library services. Her previous roles have included Associate Chief Librarian Alexander Turnbull Library, Associate Director Library Academic Services at Victoria University, and Medical Librarian (University of Otago, Wellington). I believe in that old journalistic idiom of comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable.” Paula Penfold is a journalist in the investigative unit Stuff Circuit. They were previously television journalists who were “Mark Weldon-ed” out of TV3, and found a home at Stuff creating investigative documentaries and multimedia pieces, funded by New Zealand on Air. Their most recent project, ‘Deleted’, investigated the treatment of Uyghurs in China and exposed New Zealand business and political links to Chinese companies involved in these human rights abuses. Stuff Circuit was named Best Current Affairs programme at last year’s New Zealand Television Awards. She lives in Auckland and has two children. Many thanks, I'll see you Wednesday. Paula Penfold studied geography as part of a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree at Waikato University. After completing a certificate in journalism at Christchurch Polytechnic in 1990, she joined Radio New Zealand as a journalist/producer. “I'll never forget the adrenaline of producing at ZB as the Paremoremo prison riots broke out in the late 90s,” she says.As an RNZ police reporter, Penfold did stories on serial rapist Malcolm Rewa, who was convicted in 1998 for the rape of Susan Burdett. Chris Szekely | Chief Librarian of the Alexander Turnbull Library Chris Szekely was appointed the Chief Librarian of the Alexander Turnbull Library in 2007 and is the first Māori person to hold this position. He was previously City Librarian at the Manukau City Council, where he headed one of the largest and fastest growing public library services in New Zealand. He was also instrumental in setting up Te Rōpū Whakahau, the professional association of Māori librarians where he is a life member. In 2012 Rāhui won the Picture Book Category at the New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards, as well as the LIANZA Russell Clark Award for Illustration and the Librarian’s Choice Award. Read More>>> |
